After 23 years, Final Fantasy XI locks its biggest server, Asura, away from new players after huge player counts.

Final Fantasy XI came out in 2002 for the PS2 and Windows PC. Many people, including those who started playing earlier in the game’s lifetime, have since made it part of their daily routine.

Current Final Fantasy XI director Yoji Fujito speaking with Dengeki Online revealed that before the game's 20th anniversary in 2022, Square Enix had considered ending support for the game in 2024.

"You will likely be able to play FINAL FANTASY XIV on Windows® 10 systems even after the end of support," the company said.
