Update: Three miners trapped in B.C.'s Red Chris mine identified

According to a Thursday evening update from Newmont Corp., which operates the Red Chris mine, the debris blocking access to the underground area is estimated to be 20 to 30 metres long and 7 to 8 metres high. There is a gap between the top of the pile and the roof of the mine, allowing drone access.

The incident began when the trio witnessed a small collapse. They radioed to the surface — this was about 300 to 400 metres underground — then retreated to safety in the refuge chamber. When a larger collapse happened and blocked about 20 metres of tunnel, the miners were well clear of danger.
