There's a widespread assumption that the New York Yankees still have plenty of business to get done before the MLB trade deadline. That includes a need for more starting pitching. ESPN's Jorge Castillo predicted Tuesday morning in a new article that the Yanks will call up Pittsburgh to make it happen.
Harrison Bader is being linked to a return to both the Yankees and Mets in trade talks. The Yankees are down an outfielder now with Aaron Judge sidelined with an elbow injury, and the Mets are looking to shore things up for a playoff run.
In his third MLB start, Yankees' right-hander Cam Schlittler lasted 4.1 innings, yielding three runs on seven hits and four walks, with five strikeouts, in a 4-2 loss to Tampa Bay.
The Yankees first priorities at the deadline will be pitchers, specifically a starter and some relievers, to make up for injury losses this season. The team have already traded for two infielders: third baseman Ryan McMahon from the Colorado Rockies and infielder Amed Rosario from the Washington Nationals.
Cody Bellinger is displaying some veteran poise as the Yankees face plenty of uncertainty leading up to the trade deadline.
Kwan, who turns 28 in September, entered Tuesday batting .287 with nine home runs, 37 RBIs, and 20 doubles for the inconsistent Guardians. The three-time All-Star has already posted 3.3 bWAR, and his 8.4 strikeout rate is fourth-best among qualified hitters.
Right-hander Luis Gil is scheduled to make what will probably be his final rehab assignment start on Tuesday with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He hasn’t pitched in pinstripes this year, sidelined since he suffered a high-grade lat strain way back in spring training.
The Yankees’ main focus has been on trying to play better, which they haven’t done consistently in a while. Since June 13, their 14-25 record is the third-worst in the game. Their bullpen had an atrocious 5.16 ERA over the span going into Monday.
The New York Yankees have been linked to a massive trade deadline move that could seal their World Series contention.
The New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles could come together on a trade that would give the Yankees the starting pitching help they need.
