A national park in southwest Colorado partially reopened Wednesday for the first time since a fire broke out earlier this month, while a fire at Grand Canyon National Park prompted more closures outside of the park.

On Tuesday, July 22, 35-year-old Thomas Daniel Gibbs, who hails from Freehold, made contact with loved ones at around 12 p.m. local time. It was the last they’ve heard from him. That day, Gibbs was thought to be in the area of Grandview Trail and Horseshoe Mesa, the National Park Service said in a news release.

So it’s no surprise that when the Dragon Bravo Fire overtook the Grand Canyon Lodge — and staff were forced to evacuate in mere minutes — some people grew anxious about the statue’s welfare and assumed the worst.
