A wildfire has burned through a northern suburb of Athens, Greece, prompting evacuations. On Saturday, residents of Kryoneri received three SMS messages to evacuate to safe areas.

With temperatures soaring to or beyond 38C, dry conditions and strong winds are fuelling the fire. Mr Vathrakoyannis cautioned that under such circumstances, wildfires "expand very quickly and become dangerous. These conditions are expected to prevail over the coming days."

Greece on Saturday requested EU help to battle wildfires that have sprung up in different regions as a lengthy heatwave sent temperatures soaring above 45C and gusts fuelled flames.On Saturday, the temperature reached 45.

A firefighting helicopter crashed into the sea while attempting to collect water to combat a blaze in Athens. All three crew members were rescued and taken to a nearby hospital.  Greece is combating a surge in wildfires amid soaring temperatures.
