On Tuesday the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency released its proposal to undo its long-standing rationale and legal mandate to regulate greenhouse gases under the decades-old Clean Air Act—part of the Trump administration’s wide-ranging campaign to dismantle federal efforts to combat climate change.

The Trump administration plans to revoke the EPA’s 2009 “endangerment finding,” a key legal basis for US climate regulations, sparking backlash from scientists, environmentalists, and former EPA officials.

The proposed rule would rescind a 2009 declaration that determined that carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases endanger public health and welfare.
