Manny Machado clouted a three-run homer Tuesday night to cap a five-run seventh inning that lifted the San Diego Padres to a 7-1 win over the visiting New York Mets.

Díaz’s two-run double added on in a game in which the Padres bunted their way to a run in the first inning and had a lucky-hop triple give them a 2-1 lead in the sixth. Before the seventh inning was over, Manny Machado had hit a three-run homer to give the bullpen some breathing room.

Just when Mike Shildt and the San Diego Padres needed it most, the best players on the team stepped up in a big way. Following back-to-back days of benches clearing in St. Louis between the Cardinals and Padres, cooler heads prevailed on Sunday.
