Recent plane crashes, including the Air India disaster that killed more than 200 people in June, have led to increased scrutiny of air safety.

Pilots of a Delta Air Lines jet with 144 passengers on board and bound for Atlanta from Mexico City on Monday morning had to slam the brakes on during takeoff to avoid colliding with a jet landing on the same runway.

The Delta flight aborted the takeoff effort and a collision was avoided. The Aeromexico plane landed safely after the incident. The Delta flight was delayed but did eventually take off as planned. The near-collision was reported to aviation authorities in Mexico as well as the FAA and U.S. National Transportation Safety Board.
